This article provides guidance on symptoms, causes, step-by-step solutions (hardware connection, static IP configuration, app permissions and OS updates, power reset, reboot), actions for specific error codes, and how to request additional support when ECU upgrades via Ethernet fail. Detailed inspection and action procedures are provided for each step.

Applicable Devices
Applies when performing Ethernet-based ECU upgrades using the following devices
- VCI2 + ECI (Wired Ethernet connection)
- VCI3 + 19-pin USB cable (Ethernet via USB)
- GDS Smart diagnostic device and Android tablet
Symptoms
- ECU upgrade fails with an error code (XXXX‑XX‑XXXX)
- Find Error Codes ⧉
Causes
- Incorrect or missing static IP configuration on the tablet
- Outdated Android OS or Google Play system update version
- Unstable VCI2/VCI3 power supply or incomplete connections
- Poor communication with ECU or vehicle
Solutions
Step 1) Verify Correct Equipment Connections
Note:
Ethernet settings manually configured may be reset during system or OS updates. Please check and reconfigure settings if necessary after updates.
Check the correct connection method required for ECU upgrades via Ethernet:
-
VCI2 + ECI: OBD → ECI → VCI2 → Tablet
Caution:
Ensure all connectors are firmly connected and that cables are not bent or damaged.
-
VCI3 + 19-pin USB cable: OBD → VCI3 → 19-pin USB → Tablet
Caution:
Ensure all connectors are firmly connected and that cables are not bent or damaged.
Step 2) Check Static IP Settings on the Tablet
- Tap the recent apps button (□) on the navigation bar.
- Open Android Settings and navigate as follows:
- Option A: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Option B: Settings → Network & Internet → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Set the static IP as below and tap [Save]:
- IP address: 10.0.128.0
- Netmask: 255.0.0.0
- DNS address: 8.8.8.8
- Default gateway: 10.0.128.0
- Proxy: None
Step 3) Check App Permissions and Android OS & Google Play System Updates
A. App Permissions – GITMCommManagerService
When performing ECU upgrades, GDS Smart will request any missing app permissions.
Please be sure to select [Confirm] or [Allow].

B. Android OS & Google Play System Updates
- Open Settings on the tablet.
- Navigate to About tablet → Software information.
- Select Google Play system update.
- Ensure the tablet is fully up to date (minimum: Android OS 13 + Google Play System 2024 or later).
Step 4) If ECU Upgrade Continues to Fail After Steps 1–3
Warning: Disconnecting the vehicle battery must be done in a safe working environment.
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Wait at least 5 minutes until all ECUs are completely powered off.
- Reconnect the battery and retry the ECU upgrade process 2–3 times.
Step 5) Reboot the Tablet if Symptoms Persist
- Turn off the tablet completely.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Turn it back on and retry the upgrade.
