Important: Hardware Generation Identification & Smart DLogger PC Software Notice
-
Distinction Between Smart DLogger (PC Software) & Hardware: Smart DLogger is the Windows PC control software (supporting USB Cable and Bluetooth connections only), while the hardware device covered in this guide is the 2nd-generation data logger CVCI-201 (CVCI II / serial prefix
UBP*). The CVCI-201 uses a cigar-jack wireless trigger module and a dedicated30pin to USB cable, and its built-in flash memory is recognized on a PC as aRemovable Disk. - 1st-Gen CVCI (CVCI-I) Service Termination Notice: Hardware inspection and repair services for 1st-generation CVCI devices were officially terminated on March 31, 2021 due to component obsolescence (refer to announcement: Notice of End of CVCI-I Repair). Upgrading to a newer model is recommended if a 1st-generation device fails.

1. Main Unit No-Power, Boot Failure & Sky Blue LED Rapid Blinking (Firmware Recovery)
Field Symptoms: The CVCI-201 (CVCI II) does not power on when connected to the vehicle OBD-II diagnostic terminal or the dedicated PC 30pin to USB cable; boot sequence halts prematurely; or when attempting to pair with the trigger module or connecting to a PC via USB cable, the front LED indicator rapidly blinks in Sky Blue and fails to enter normal operation.
Self-Service Checks (Please perform the following steps before requesting repair):
-
Execute Firmware Update on Sky Blue Rapid Blinking (Primary Corrective Action):
Rapid blinking in Sky Blue indicates a firmware mismatch or corrupted firmware requiring software recovery.- Connect the CVCI II main body directly to a PC using the dedicated
30pin to USB cable. - Launch the Smart DLogger program on the PC.
- Navigate to the [⑤ FW Update] menu (or
[Device Setting] → [My Device] → [Device Connection] → [Firmware Management]) and complete the firmware update to the latest version (v01.05 or higher). - Reboot the device after update completion and verify that the Sky Blue rapid blinking stops and the unit enters normal standby (Ready) mode (refer to: CVCI 2 Pairing Failure with Sky Blue LED Blinking Rapidly).
- If Previous Firmware Version Still Displays After Update: If the device information in Smart DLogger still indicates the previous firmware version despite completing the update, completely disconnect power from the unit (power cycle reboot) and reconnect to the PC program to re-verify that the updated firmware version (main body v01.07+ / trigger v01.05+) is reflected properly (refer to: Resolution for Previous Firmware Version Displaying After Update).
- Connect the CVCI II main body directly to a PC using the dedicated
-
Check Vehicle OBD-II Power Voltage & Cross-Check Cable:
The rated operating voltage of the CVCI-201 is DC 9V ~ 30V. Verify vehicle battery state of charge and check whether the vehicle OBD fuse is blown. Swap-test with a known-good spare main DLC cable or cigar power cable to rule out internal wire rupture. -
Reformat Built-In Memory (`Removable Disk` as `FAT / 32KB` + Copy `Date.evt` & `CONFIG.dat`):
File system corruption or an invalid event file in the built-in memory can cause the boot process to freeze. Connect the CVCI-201 main body to a PC using the dedicated30pin to USB cable, select the recognizedRemovable Diskin Windows Explorer, format it with File SystemFAT(orFAT32) and Allocation Unit Size32KB (32 Kilobytes), and copy both extracted event files (Date.evtandCONFIG.dat) to the root directory (refer to: How to Copy Event Files to Memory for CVCI by Manual).
Warning: Hardware Defect Indicators for Power and Booting
If the Sky Blue rapid blinking does not resolve or power fails to supply even after updating firmware via PC Smart DLogger, formatting the Removable Disk as FAT / 32KB, and testing with a known-good cable, the cause is an internal power regulator, bootloader flash memory, or mainboard hardware defect that cannot be fixed on-site.
When to Request Hardware Repair:
- Sky Blue LED continues to rapidly blink even after completing a successful firmware update through Smart DLogger.
- Device fails to power on across multiple vehicles when using a verified, known-good power cable.
- Bootloader flash is corrupted due to cable disconnection during a firmware update, resulting in no response when connected to PC or vehicle power.
2. Wireless Trigger Module Pairing Failure & Main Body / Trigger LED Status Interpretation
Field Symptoms: The wireless trigger module plugged into the vehicle cigar lighter socket fails to establish a wireless connection with the CVCI-201 main unit; pairing attempts result in Red LED blinking and timeout errors; or pressing the trigger buttons during road testing fails to initiate data logging.
Official Manual Standard: CVCI-201 (CVCI II) Main Body 4-Color LED & Wireless Trigger Module LED Status Table

Self-Service Checks (Official 40-Second Wireless Pairing Standard Protocol):
Most CVCI II wireless trigger pairing failures stem from incorrect button hold times or insufficient synchronization wait times. Please adhere strictly to the following timed sequence:
-
Vehicle Power Supply & Device Connection:
Insert the wireless trigger module into the vehicle cigar lighter socket (power outlet), connect the CVCI II (CVCI-201) main unit to the vehicle OBD-II diagnostic terminal, and turn the vehicle ignition key to ACC (or ON). -
Trigger Module Pairing Standby (Press Enter > 3 Seconds):
Press and hold the [Enter] button on the trigger module for more than 3 seconds. Release the button when the LED indicator begins to blink alternately in Green and Red. -
CVCI-201 Main Unit Pairing Switch (Press Switch > 1 Second):
Press the [Pairing Switch] located on the side of the CVCI II main body for more than 1 second. Verify that the front LED of the main body begins to blink alternately in Blue and Red. -
Wireless Synchronization Wait Time (~40 Seconds):
Allow approximately 40 seconds for both devices to discover each other and establish an encrypted RF communication channel. Do not press any additional buttons during this synchronization period. -
Verify Successful Pairing Status:
Upon successful pairing, the [Enter] button on the trigger module illuminates Solid Green, and the active channel indicator (VCI II / AorCCP / A) illuminates Green. -
Check Trigger Generation Compatibility & Cigar Socket Power:
Confirm that the trigger module is a genuine CVCI II wireless trigger module. Legacy 1st-generation CVCI trigger modules (which used an underside pin-hole) are incompatible with CVCI-201. Additionally, verify that the cigar socket provides 12V power and test in an alternate vehicle power socket to rule out blown cigar fuses. -
Transitioning to Record Mode After Pairing & Verifying 60-Second Recording:
After pairing with the trigger module is complete ([Enter]lit Solid Green), press the [Enter] button on the wireless trigger module during driving to enter Record Mode. A buzzer sounds, the wireless trigger LED blinks rapidly, and the main body status LED stays Purple while recording 60 seconds of data (50s before + 10s after trigger press) into a.remfile before returning to Solid Green standby (refer to: How to Switch to Record Mode After CVCI Pairing). -
Verify Both Event Files (`Date.evt` & `CONFIG.dat`) After Manual Copy to Removable Disk:
If you manually copy the event files directly to the built-in Removable Disk via USB rather than using the Smart DLogger automatic PC setup, ensure that both extracted files (Date.evtandCONFIG.dat) are copied to the root directory, and reconfigure trigger pairing in Smart DLogger if the trigger module does not link automatically (refer to: Resolution When Trigger Fails to Pair After Manual Event File Copy).
Warning: Wireless Communication Module Hardware Defect Criteria
If pairing fails to complete and returns to Red blinking or an unlit state after executing the 3-second Enter + 1-second Pairing Switch sequence across multiple vehicles and functional cigar sockets, the internal RF wireless module on the main board or the trigger module internal circuit is defective.
When to Request Hardware Repair:
- Pairing synchronization repeatedly fails across multiple vehicles despite following the official 40-second procedure.
- The trigger module buttons and LEDs remain completely unlit in verified live cigar power sockets.
- Wireless connection drops intermittently upon vehicle vibration or driving after successful pairing.
3. PC Smart DLogger Device Registration Failure, Bluetooth Driver Conflict & USB Removable Disk Recognition
Field Symptoms: CVCI II is not detected in Smart DLogger during [③ Device Setup]; connecting via the dedicated 30pin to USB cable causes the PC to recognize the unit only as a generic "Removable Disk (USB Drive)" rather than a diagnostic device, preventing automatic event setup; or the device is absent from the PC Bluetooth pairing list.
Self-Service Checks:
-
Device Recognized Only as Removable Disk via USB (Firmware Baseline Check):
Automatic device registration and event setup via the dedicated30pin to USB cablerequire CVCI II firmware `v01.05 or higher` and the latest Smart DLogger software.-
Limitation on Firmware v01.04 or Lower: When the unit firmware is
v01.04 or lower, USB cable registration and auto-setup are unsupported due to hardware architecture, and the built-in memory appears only as a Removable Disk. -
Resolution Procedure: Units running
v01.04 or lowerMUST first be registered via Bluetooth wireless connection. Once connected via Bluetooth, use the [⑤ FW Update] menu in Smart DLogger to upgrade firmware tov01.05 or higher. Following the firmware update, automatic setup via USB cable will function normally (refer to: CVCI II USB Connection and Auto-Setup Failure Resolution).
-
Limitation on Firmware v01.04 or Lower: When the unit firmware is
-
Verify Windows Bluetooth Driver Stack (`Generic Bluetooth Adapter` Requirement):
If the PC Bluetooth adapter driver is set to a receive-only stack, Smart DLogger cannot establish bidirectional communication with CVCI II.- Press [Windows Key + X] and open [Device Manager] on your PC.
- Expand the [Bluetooth] section and verify that the adapter is listed as `Generic Bluetooth Adapter`. If it displays as `Generic Bluetooth Radio` (receive-only driver) or shows a yellow warning icon, update the driver to the PC manufacturer's latest chipset/Bluetooth driver.
- Ensure Windows Updates and .NET Framework are fully up to date (refer to: CVCI II Registration Failure in Smart DLogger Setup Menu).
- If CVCI II appears in an error state under Control Panel [Devices and Printers], remove the device from Windows Bluetooth settings and re-register in Smart DLogger.
-
Utilize Manual Setup (`[⑥ User Options] → [Manual] → [① Home/Start]`) When Vehicle is Absent:
If the target vehicle is unavailable at the service bay or you need to download an event file without direct vehicle communication, use the Manual Setup mode in Smart DLogger.- In Smart DLogger, click [⑥ User Options] in the upper-right corner → change Setup Type to [Manual] → close the dialog.
- Click [① Home/Start] in the upper-left corner and select the target CVCI II.
- Manually enter the target vehicle's VIN, ECU ROM ID, and Mileage, select the target system and symptoms, and download the matched event file directly from the server (refer to: CVCI-201 Manual Mode Event Setup Guide).
When to Request Hardware Repair:
- USB port communication completely fails across multiple updated PCs with verified dedicated
30pin to USB cables(internal 30-pin connector cold solder joint or I/O controller failure). - The CVCI II serial number cannot be detected via Bluetooth by multiple functional PCs with proper drivers.
4. Vehicle Data Logging & Conversion Precautions and EV/HEV Sleep Mode Wake-Up Limitation
Field Symptoms: Pressing the trigger switch while driving does not initiate data recording; no log files (.rem) are generated on the built-in Removable Disk after test driving or [② Data Conversion] fails; or after turning off the vehicle ignition (IG OFF), the unit enters sleep mode and fails to wake up when restarting the vehicle.
Self-Service Checks & Operational Conditions:
-
CVCI-201 Sleep Mode Entry and Automatic Wake-Up Conditions (Eco-Friendly Limitation):
After the vehicle ignition is turned OFF (IG OFF), CVCI-201 enters Sleep Mode when no communication signals are detected, preventing vehicle battery drain. While in Sleep Mode, the device wakes up ONLY upon detecting either of the following two triggers:- Trigger 1: Vehicle CAN communication signal detection
- Trigger 2: Voltage drop detection (cranking voltage drop during engine start)
Important: Structural Limitation on Electric Vehicles (EV) and Hybrid Vehicles (HEV)
In Electric Vehicles (EV) and Hybrid Vehicles (HEV), the vehicle central gateway blocks CAN signals on the OBD diagnostic port during vehicle sleep, and because there is no starter motor cranking, no 12V cranking voltage drop occurs. Consequently, when connected solely via the OBD cable, CVCI-201 CANNOT automatically wake up in EV/HEV vehicles (refer to: CVCI-201 Wake-Up Conditions).
When logging data on eco-friendly vehicles, connect directly via a CCP harness or disconnect and re-plug the OBD cable immediately before test driving to supply initial power (※ The 3rd-generation CVCI-301 resolved this limitation by incorporating a wired AUX trigger for forced wake-up). -
Mandatory Precaution Before `[② Data Conversion]`: Unplug Wireless Trigger Module from Cigar Jack:
When converting logged raw.remfiles into analysis files (.gdl, .DAT) using [② Data Conversion] in Smart DLogger, you MUST unplug the wireless trigger module from the vehicle cigar jack (power OFF) before starting conversion. Leaving the wireless trigger module powered on nearby maintains RF communication and can cause severe conversion slowdowns or communication interference errors. -
Manual Event File Copy (`Date.evt` & `CONFIG.dat`) on "Infinite Waiting" After Trigger Selection:
If GSW or Smart DLogger halts on an infinite waiting screen after selecting the trigger device, connect the CVCI-201 to a PC via the30pin to USB cable, reformat the recognized Removable Disk asFAT / 32KB, and manually copy bothDate.evtandCONFIG.datto the root directory. Reconnect the unit to the vehicle, verify the trigger Enter button lights up Solid Green, and conduct the test drive. -
Verify ECU ROM ID Compatibility:
If the ROM ID configured in the event file does not match the actual ECU/TCU ROM ID of the test vehicle (indicated when onlyVCI II / Ablinks Green on the trigger module while[Enter]remains unlit), data will not be recorded. Confirm the controller ROM ID using a diagnostic scanner prior to logging.
When to Request Hardware Repair:
- Unit fails to receive CAN communication responses across multiple internal combustion engine vehicles and illuminates the Red main body LED despite verified ROM ID match and intact DLC harness (internal CAN transceiver IC failure).
- Trigger input signals fail to register in built-in flash memory despite formatting the Removable Disk and loading verified event files.
5. Physical Damage to Cables/Connectors & Hardware Repair Intake Criteria
Field Symptoms: OBD-II terminal pins bent or broken; cigar power cable outer jacket torn or internal wires ruptured; main unit 30-pin port (30pin to USB cable receptacle) loose or damaged; built-in flash memory (Removable Disk) unreadable; or internal Real-Time Clock (RTC) backup battery depleted causing logged event timestamps to reset to a past date (e.g., Year 2000).
| Component | On-Site Self-Service Check | Hardware Repair Intake Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| OBD & Power Cables | Inspect connector pins for bent pins; swap-test 1:1 with known-good spare cable | Broken terminal pins, severed wires, exposed copper conductors (replace cable) |
| Dedicated 30pin to USB Port | Test with rear motherboard USB port and verified spare 30pin to USB cable
|
Bent internal pins, cracked solder joints, connector detachment from PCB |
| Built-In Memory (Removable Disk) | Connect to PC and format Removable Disk as FAT / 32KB; re-copy event files |
Disk cannot be formatted, I/O errors, or internal flash memory IC failure |
| Wireless RF Module | Update Smart DLogger firmware; adhere strictly to 40-second pairing protocol | Persistent pairing timeout and Bluetooth failure across all environments (replace board) |
| Internal RTC Battery | Check time synchronization in Smart DLogger when connected to PC | Logged event timestamps reset to Year 2000 repeatedly after disconnecting from PC |
When to Request Hardware Repair:
- Physical damage to terminal pins, port detachment, or case damage is clearly visible.
- Power or communication cuts out intermittently due to internal circuit faults despite using verified undamaged cables.
