Ethernet‑required ECU Upgrade workflow using:
- VCI2 + ECI (wired Ethernet path)
- VCI3 + 19‑pin USB cable (Ethernet over USB)
- GDS Smart diagnostic device and Android tablet
Symptom
- ECU Upgrade fails with an error code (XXXX‑XX‑XXXX)
- Find the error code ⧉
Cause
- Incorrect or missing tablet Fixed‑IP configuration
- Outdated Android OS or Google Play System update
- Unstable VCI2/VCI3 power or incomplete connection
- Temporary ECU/vehicle-side communication stall requiring power reset
Resolution
Step 1) Verify correct Ethernet hardware connection
Note:
System or OS updates may reset manually configured Ethernet settings. Please verify and reconfigure the settings after an update if necessary
Confirm the exact connection method required for Ethernet upgrades:
-
VCI2 + ECI: OBD → ECI → VCI2 → Tablet
PLEASE NOTE:
Ensure all connectors are firmly seated and cables are not bent or damaged.
-
VCI3 + 19‑pin USB cable: OBD → VCI3 → 19‑pin USB → Tablet
PLEASE NOTE:
Ensure all connectors are firmly seated and cables are not bent or damaged.
Step 2) Verify static/fixed IP setting in tablet settings
- Tap the Recent apps button (□) in the navigation bar.
- Open Android settings and navigate:
- Variant A: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Variant B: Settings → Network & Internet → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Set the following static IP and tap [Save]:
- IP address: 10.0.128.0
- Netmask: 255.0.0.0
- DNS address: 8.8.8.8
- Default gateway: 10.0.128.0
- Proxy: None
Step 3) Confirm App permissions and Android OS & Google Play System update
A. App Permission – GITMCommManagerService
When you carry out an ECU Upgrade, GDS Smart asks for missing app permissions.
Please make sure to tap [OK] or [Allow].

B. Android OS & Google Play System update
- Open Settings on the tablet.
- Go to About tablet → Software information.
- Select Google Play system update.
- Ensure the tablet is fully updated (minimum: Android OS 13 + Google Play System 2024 or later).
Step 4) After completing Step 1–3, if ECU Upgrade still fails
Warning: Vehicle battery removal requires safe working conditions.
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Wait at least 5 minutes for all ECUs to fully power down.
- Reconnect the battery and retry the ECU Upgrade process 2–3 times.
Step 5) If the symptom persists, reboot the tablet
- Turn off the tablet completely.
- Wait ~10 seconds.
- Turn it back on and attempt the upgrade again.
