Overview
This guide provides comprehensive troubleshooting procedures for errors encountered during the installation, automatic update, or launch of the Smart DLogger Windows PC application, including the widely reported 'Fail to update Smart DLogger (Step 5/6 : Installing HWDriver)' error.
Smart DLogger is a specialized Windows PC software designed to manage driving data recording, configure triggers, and extract flight records from vehicle data loggers (CVCI-301 and CVCI-201). It operates independently from tablet-based diagnostic applications (such as KDS 2.0 or GDS Smart).
Windows USB Driver Installation Block vs. Hardware/Firmware Defect
HWDriver) on the computer. This is NOT a hardware malfunction, device defect, or firmware (FW) corruption of your CVCI-301 or CVCI-201 unit. RMA hardware repair or service ticket submission is not required for this issue. Follow the self-service steps in Section 1 to resolve the Windows security or driver block directly on your PC.
Section 1: Resolving 'Fail to update Smart DLogger (Step 5/6 : Installing HWDriver)' & Update Failures
During the Smart DLogger automatic update process (commonly when updating to or from version v4.0.4.7), the updater executes Step 5 of 6: 'Installing HWDriver'. If the process halts or throws an update failure dialog, review the root causes and step-by-step solutions below.
Root Causes Verified in Field Operations
-
Corporate Data Safety (DLP) & Antivirus / Endpoint Security Blocking: Corporate security suites (such as Symantec, McAfee, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender, AhnLab Safe Transaction, or Data Loss Prevention agents) actively block kernel-level USB hardware driver installations (
HWDriver) during Step 5/6. This is the primary root cause in over 90% of field occurrences. - CVCI USB Cable Connected During Update: If the CVCI-301 or CVCI-201 is plugged into the PC via USB while the updater runs, Windows locks the existing active USB driver file, causing the new HWDriver overwrite to fail at Step 5/6.
-
Insufficient Windows Administrator Privileges: The auto-updater requires elevated administrative rights to write driver binaries into Windows System32 / DriverStore and write application files into
C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS inside2\SmartDLogger\orC:\Program Files (x86)\DLogger\. - Legacy Auto-Updater File Conflict: Earlier updater components (e.g., in v4.0.4.7) may fail to cleanly overwrite locked temporary setup packages.
Step 1: Immediate Self-Service Actions (Before Retrying Update)
- Disconnect CVCI USB Cable: Unplug the CVCI USB cable from the PC USB port. The CVCI unit must remain disconnected during the entire driver update process.
-
Disable Endpoint Protection / Whitelist Directories: Temporarily pause Windows Defender Real-time Protection and third-party antivirus, anti-malware, or corporate DLP monitoring. Alternatively, request your IT security administrator to add whitelist exclusions for the Smart DLogger installation paths (
C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS inside2\SmartDLogger\andC:\Program Files (x86)\DLogger\) and allow theHWDriverinstaller. - Run as Administrator: Locate the Smart DLogger icon on your Desktop, right-click it, and select 'Run as administrator'. Allow User Account Control (UAC) elevation when prompted.
Step 2: Clean Reinstallation (If Auto-Update Continues to Fail at Step 5/6)
If Step 1 does not complete the update successfully, performing a clean reinstallation using the latest full installer package completely bypasses the auto-updater conflict and installs the latest verified HWDriver:
- Uninstall Existing Smart DLogger: Open Windows Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features (or Settings → Apps → Installed apps), locate Smart DLogger, and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts to remove the program.
-
Download the Full Installer Package: Download the latest complete installer archive ('New SmartDLogger Install Program' or 'SmartDLogger v4.0 Program') from the official portal:
- Hyundai Portal: http://inside.globalserviceway.com/ → Top right Library (자료실) → search for 'SmartDLogger v4.0 Program' or 'New SmartDLogger Install Program'
- Kia Portal: https://dlogger.kia.com/ → Top right Archive (자료실) → search for 'New SmartDLogger Install Program'
-
Extract and Install as Administrator: Extract the downloaded
.zipfile to a local folder (e.g.,C:\Temp\SmartDLogger\). Right-clickSetup.exeand select 'Run as administrator'. Complete the installation wizard without connecting the CVCI unit. - Reconnect and Verify: Once installation finishes, restart your PC. Connect the CVCI unit to the PC via USB and ensure the CVCI unit is powered ON. Open Windows Device Manager and verify that the CVCI device is recognized under USB Controllers / Ports without any yellow warning mark.
Section 2: Installation Path Access Failure & 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object' Error
When attempting to launch or update Smart DLogger, an error dialog may appear displaying access failure to C:\Program Files (x86)\DLogger\ (or C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS inside2\SmartDLogger\), or a .NET runtime crash: 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object.'
-
Folder Permissions: Standard user accounts lack NTFS write permissions in
C:\Program Files (x86)\. Have your local IT administrator grant 'Full Control' or 'Modify' permissions on the installation directory to your Windows user group. -
Direct Execution: Navigate directly to the installation folder (
C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS inside2\SmartDLogger\orC:\Program Files (x86)\DLogger\), right-clickSmartDLogger.exe, and select 'Run as administrator'. -
Recreate Desktop Shortcut: If the program runs fine from the installation folder but fails from the Desktop icon, delete the old shortcut, right-click
SmartDLogger.exe, and choose Send to → Desktop (create shortcut).
Section 3: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable & 'Unable to load DLL SQLite.interop.dll' Error
If Smart DLogger fails to launch with the error message Unable to load DLL 'SQLite.interop.dll' or reports missing MSVCR/MSVCP runtime DLLs, the required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries are missing or corrupt.
-
Locate Bundled Redistributables: Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to
C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS inside2\SmartDLogger\Drivers\vcredist\(orC:\Program Files (x86)\DLogger\Drivers\vcredist\). -
Installation Order for 64-bit OS: Because Smart DLogger runs as a 32-bit application, you must install both
vcredist_x86.exefirst, followed byvcredist_x64.exe(for 32-bit Windows, installvcredist_x86.exeonly). - Official Microsoft Redistributables: If the bundled folder is not present, install the official Microsoft Visual C++ 2010, 2012, and 2015–2022 Redistributable packages (x86 and x64) from Microsoft's official download center.
- Reboot System: Restart the computer after installing the redistributables before relaunching Smart DLogger.
Section 4: Distinction for Legacy v4.0.0.0 'Off-line' / 'Check Network Connection' Error
Please note the clear functional difference between the legacy v4.0.0.0 force-update patch and current update errors:
Applicability of DLogger_ForceUpdater.exe
DLogger_ForceUpdater.exe (packaged as DLogger_ForceUpdater_v1.0.0.1.zip) was created specifically for legacy Smart DLogger versions v4.0.0.0 up to v4.0.1.1 that failed to connect to the update server due to server migration ('Off-line' / 'Check Network Connection').Important:
DLogger_ForceUpdater.exe will NOT run and will NOT resolve errors on newer versions such as v4.0.4.7 or above. If you are experiencing Step 5/6 Installing HWDriver on v4.0.4.7 or later, do NOT attempt to run the legacy force-updater. Instead, follow the clean reinstallation procedure detailed in Section 1.Quick Reference: Symptoms, Self-Service Actions & Escalation Criteria
