This article provides guidance on PDI inspection conditions common to electrified vehicles (EV, HEV) and resolution procedures for Entry Check failures in electric vehicles, Battery SOC below the threshold in hybrids, and high-voltage battery SOH failures in electric vehicles.
Common to Electric Vehicles (EV): Block Automatic 12V Top-Up Charging by Opening the Hood
Even with all electrical equipment turned off in an electric vehicle (EV), the 12V battery voltage rises to 14V or higher, or Entry Check fails due to excessive current.
In electric vehicles, the high-voltage battery automatically tops up the 12V auxiliary battery even while waiting with IG ON.
- Start PDI with the vehicle hood open (Hood Open) to enter service mode. Top-up charging through the high-voltage relay is blocked, allowing normal inspection.
The AX1 EV for Europe and Australia is an exception that requires both the hood and trunk to be open.
Common to Hybrids (HEV): Charge the Auxiliary Battery via the LDC by Maintaining READY Mode
In a hybrid (HEV) vehicle, the voltage is normal, but Battery SOC is below the threshold (70%), resulting in an NG judgment.
The 12V auxiliary battery in an HEV vehicle does not charge with the ignition OFF.
- Turn on the vehicle and maintain READY mode to charge to an SOC of 70% or higher through the LDC (DC-DC converter).
- After charging, turn off the engine (IG ON) and perform the inspection.
For the MX5 HEV for North America and Europe, among others, there are precautions regarding power cutoff by the 6-minute timer during automatic inspection and switching back to [Customer] mode.
Actions for an Electric Vehicle High-Voltage Battery (HV Battery) SOH Failure Judgment
The high-voltage battery state of health (SOH) is judged by reading the actual measured value from the vehicle's BMS controller as is.
- If it is below the threshold, refer the case to the manufacturer's Techline for detailed battery diagnostics.
